Solo-Domesticus: Channeling Martha Stewart

OK, I’m not sure if I’m getting in touch with my feminine side or what but…Solo-Dad: A Domestic-God?

I’m definitely feeling it’s time for some domestic improvements around the Beach Bungalow.

It’s hard to explain, but the last few weeks I’ve been considering all of the following improvements to our home.

  • Painting some accent walls so the place isn’t so monochrome.
  • Introducing some plant life around the place including doing some limited landscaping on the patio.
  • Collecting more of the Fiestaware dishes that I already have. I’m talking canisters, mixing bowls, and serving trays.
  • Making my bedroom more of a personal space that reflects my personality and preferences. Right now it resembles..well…nothing but a sleeping space.

So with all this domestic energy flowing through my universe, I’m thinking it needs to be channeled appropriately so I don’t suddenly start stocking up on moisturizers and hair conditioner.

Two Rules

I have two rules when it comes to ‘adding things’ around the house.

  1. The item can’t duplicate the function of something I already have. If it does, it’s a replacement and the existing thing gets recycled, donated, or sold.
  2. It must be simple. I like things simple and uncomplicated.

For instance, I don’t have any houseplants in the beach bungalow at present.  So plants are an essential and they’re pretty simple.

My music is in my iPod and when I want to listen at home I run it through the home theater sound system that connected to my DVD player. I don’t have a boom box or other music player. I don’t have music on my Blackberry or any other device.

Ever felt this way?

Dads – ever felt this way about improving your home in a way that didn’t involve a pick up truck full of stuff you could only buy at Home Depot?

Moms (and Green Thumb Dads) – Give  me some plant pointers?  I want plants that are simple (watering I can handle – complex plant food and soils, won’t happen) and don’t need a lot of direct sunlight.  I’ve got a great window sill in the kitchen that gets many hours of filtered light through a security window.  What do you suggest?

Leave me your pointers in the comment section below. :)
